I always feel weird saying, “Listen to me talk!” But it’s necessary because of the message.

Finally had a minute to listen to the interview and it was great. Everyone needs to get the message!

You sound like a lovely southern lady and actually quite a bit like me. But I do somewhat cringe at my nasally southern drawl, trying to get past it in the Crone stage ( who cares anyway) you sound just fine, and your work is just what we need right now!

Thanks for listening.

Every time I hear myself speak, I relive a bad theatrical review I got in my 20s. My voice was “etched in acid” according to the reviewer. Couple that with all the people who have made fun of my accent to my face, repeated what they think it sounds like, called me stupid and slow, talked to me like I’m mentally damaged, called me racist, and similar, and it’s no wonder I have a complex about my voice. I prefer being in Europe, where non-native English-speakers never know where to put me and almost never classify me as American the first time, giving me time to avoid stereotyping.

Oh wow, folks can really be cruel. I wonder why we feel so free to judge each other about everything, including the way we talk? Nevermind, it’s a piece of the whole picture. My mother, grandmother and aunts all criticized each other and everyone else. It’s embedded in our culture because, patriarchy. But the good news is we can consciously change ourselves. I’ve been working on that very thing for sometime. I’m a slow learner but I keep after it. I challenge myself when the thoughts come in.

I’m really happy you are in a more accepting country. It’s awesome that you’re living life on your terms. I live in the UK in my head. I walk the Ridgeway and bother the ancient stones a lot. I see from my friends I’ve never met that they have the same culture issues as us but it’s still nice to dream of living 3 months there and 3 months at home then 3 months in Spain, walk the Camino and on and on. So much to learn from travel.

When I lived in Canada, everyone seemed to love my accent. My best friend said she loved to hear me say “iced tea”. Apparently I draw out my vowels.

Anyway, good on you for living your best life and doing really important work for the world at the same time. Sending you good energy for the continued fight!
